Yugen Architecture: CK House is a family haven nestled in the heart of Kannavam, a picturesque village in Thalassery, within the Kannur District of Kerala, India. Renowned for its lush greenery and scenic routes, Kannavam provides a tranquil forest setting that perfectly complements the design ethos of CK House. Site being positioned along one of such routes, we decided the house should seamlessly integrate with its verdant surroundings while asserting its architectural presence. To achieve this, we adopted a farmhouse-inspired form, featuring two juxtaposed gable-shaped volumes—each characterized by a triangular profile at the top and a rectangular base, maintaining proportional symmetry to create a distinctive and contextual silhouette.
Designed for a family of six, a couple and their four children, the project commenced with a pre-existing foundation. The client stipulated that the ground floor plan remain unaltered and that no substantial structural modifications be undertaken on the first floor, preserving the building's load-bearing integrity. Additionally, a canopy-like car porch at the front was a key requirement. The veranda walls facing the front of the house were clad in black leather-finish granite, imparting a floating appearance to the two gable forms.
The interior design of CK House is a amalgamation of Scandinavian minimalism, Japanese traditional aesthetics, and Indian vernacular elements. This eclectic blend is articulated through minimalist interventions, such as the integrating elements inspired from tatami mats and shoji screens, which seamlessly coexist with minimalist furniture and natural textures. The interiors exude effortless elegance, characterized by sleek, clean lines and a harmonious palette.
The materiality of the space features knotty pine wood veneers and beige Italian marble, fostering a sense of harmony and balance. Natural light floods the interiors, enhancing the beige tones and creating a serene atmosphere. Contrasting elements, such as the black marble coffee table and dining table with minimalist black chairs, introduce a dynamic visual interplay. The smooth Italian marble surfaces contribute to an ambiance of ultimate comfort and luxury, while the interplay of styles satisfies the diverse needs and aesthetic preferences of each family member, making CK House the ideal family nest.
Each bedroom is meticulously designed to reflect the personal tastes of its occupant. The master bedroom embodies Indian vernacular design, preferred by the client, while the elder son's bedroom features a play of grey and whites, introducing a sense of coolness to the space. The younger son's room embraces shades of beige with undertones of brown, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The guest bedroom, designed with timeless elegance in mind, adheres to the overall theme, ensuring it remains stylish and relevant despite changing trends.
