The Wuqian Gymnasium, designed by POA Architects led by Pan Chengshou, recently started construction in Cangnan, a historic city in Zhejiang Province. Wuqian Stadium covers an area of about 12,000 square meters and a total construction area of about 35,000 square meters. It includes three major theme functions: a national sports center, a neighborhood service center, and a business center. POA's design combines thestadium with community neighborhood supporting services within a 15-minute living circle, creating amultifunctional sports complex in the city center.
Pan Chengshou: "We dream of creating not only a sports and ecological urban space, butalso an attractive community neighborhood center, a place where children, young people, the elderly, families, daily and weekends can come. We have created a unique urban garden living room where people, buildings and communities interact and share, making it a new type of urban space that is more open, friendly and dynamic.
Cangnan, China, is a famous city of landscape culture with thousands of years of history. It contains profound traditional culture and philosophical thoughts, beautiful mountains and rivers, and a green coverage rate of over 50%. The profound historical and regional culture and natural landscape are the most precious resources of this city. The architectural form design of POA uses the pinyin abbreviation "W" of Wu Qian as the motif element, whichmeans "between two mountains; the simple and powerful form expression is full of tension and inspiring, and expresses the connotation of sportsmanship directly.
At the same time, it creates a smooth, organic, futuristic and technological architectural concept, which greatly enhances the citizens' experience of space and vision. The sustainable development concept of innovation, coordination, green, openness and sharing establishes a cultural heritage relationship with the landscape history of this city.
Wuqian Gymnasium is surrounded by high-density communities. People gather from the city. The ultra-long city display surface provides an unprecedented broad view. The building shape is undulating, like a continuous flow of mountain terrain, forming a visual landscape effect in the city where you can see a forest from the front and a peak from the side, and different heights and distances. People can stop and climb in it. The top of the building is shaped like a crown, crowning the building. The "W City Crown" will become a spiritualsymbol for spreading sports culture and enhancing community cohesion.
Wuqian Gymnasium breaks the independent spatial relationship of traditional sports stadiums and transforms it into a more continuous and complex spatial combination. Thebuilding is connected to nature inside and outside, and people in it are immersed in the mountains and rivers at any time. The shapes are intertwined between mountains and rivers, and people can climb up the stairs or enjoy the scenery in the roof garden. The "W City Crown" on the roof is also the location of the CBA basketball training hall. Every year, the national basketball team, CBA or WCBA come here for training. At the top of this city, athletes prepare for their dreams and honors.
The design of POA abandons the traditional official construction model of large squares and large landmarks, and takes the combination of national sports and community and neighborhood supporting services as the starting point of urban space design, pursuing the spiritual consistency of people, buildings and environment in the city. The slogan of competitive sports in the early days of human beings entering modern civilization is "higher, faster, stronger, which is also in line with the value orientation of challenging and conqueringnature in urban construction over the past century. However, future urban development should usher in a new stage, taking the organic symbiotic relationship between sports and health scenes and community service scenes as a new goal to pursue. With innovation as the driving force, let sports venues also become leisure venues for people's daily lives, let buildings integrate into the community, and become places for citizens to interact, relax and share, which are both practical, functional and express aesthetic appeals. This is sports, life, and art.
POA's design generally understands and explores the inherent flexibility and newpossibilities in simple and traditional functions, enhances these functions through new organizations and logics, and analyzes the values and development direction of contemporary China. It is committed to exploring a future path of organic symbiosis and sustainable development between people, buildings and the environment, so that the green, kind and natural ecological space environment can give people a comfortable and free living experience.
By using these carriers as concrete representations of contemporary life, buildings are no longer isolated objects defined in architectural modernity, but will become an organicallysymbiotic part of human life and the urban environment. Pan Chengshou said: "The relationship between people, buildings and the environment is not only about humanity, ecology and sustainable development, but also about spirit and artistic conception. This is the vitality and oriental philosophy contained in the history of this land, which needs to be inherited and developed in future cities.
