The meticulous restoration of a 1920s house in the Juárez neighborhood of Mexico City, together with a careful choice of textures, materials and colors that evoke Mediterranean landscapes, bring to life the latest project from the Mexican studio headed up by Regina Galvanduque and Andrés Mier y Terán.
A careful selection of traditional Italian elements came together with the contemporary Mexican creative vision in the design of Piazza Pasticcio, the most recent project by the multidisciplinary project MYT+GLVDK. The choice of a building dating back to the 1920s in the Colonia Juárez offers a genuine historic setting for the creation of distinctive ambiences that faithfully reflect the Mediterranean cultural heritage and local innovation. A meticulous restoration process has preserved the original architectural details, including the doors, lintels, and windows, while the discreet incorporation of technology ensures the spaces are comfortable and functional.
The concept put forward by Grupo Pasticcio—a young team driven by the passion to offer a sensory and culinary journey to the heart of Italy—revolves around pasta at its center. Conceived by Francesco Gaillard, the idea comprises Piazza Pasticcio and the store Alimentari Pasticcio, where visitors find a selection of sauces, fresh pasta, cheeses, wines and exclusive branded products, introducing them to the philosophy of the dolce vita, where good eating and good company are celebrated around the table. The setting brings together authentic Italian tradition with contemporary innovation and the influence of local flavors. Under the direction of chef Matteo Zega, the menu offers a selection of antipasti, a variety of pasta dishes and emblematic desserts that evoke the wealth of cuisine from south of the Alps.
The spaces are clustered around the central courtyard, which thanks to a retractable roof becomes the heart of the restaurant. During the day, natural light illuminates an open-plan space that is ideal for informal gatherings. At night, the roof is closed and the lighting dimmed, creating a more intimate atmosphere. The design team—led by Regina Galvanduque and Andrés Mier y Terán—has fashioned flexible spaces capable of easily adapting to the different needs and times of the day, prioritizing an ambiance that fosters connection and encourages conviviality through the art of sharing. The landscaping incorporates vertical gardens, plants in terracotta pots and a stone fountain, elements that imbue the different spaces with calm and preserve their versatility.
One of the standout features of Piazza Pasticcio’s design is the use of Mexican onyx marble, incorporated into key elements such as countertops, bars, and tables, creating striking focal points. With soft hues of yellow, orange, and ivory, this material establishes a visual and tactile connection that not only enhances beauty but also reflects the studio’s commitment to using local and sustainable resources. The combination of this marble with other materials like wood, textiles, and metal achieves a perfect balance between rustic charm and sophistication, reinforcing the constant dialogue between tradition and modernity.
The furniture was designed with a focus on authenticity and functionality. Inspired by the forms of the 1960s, Nordic-style high and low chairs with cane backs and solid wood frame are complemented by a new version of the director’s chair, with metal details and renewed wood finishes. The staff uniforms, created in partnership with ⅛ Takamura, are prepared with high-quality textiles and use modern tailoring suited to movement and to work, reflecting the sophisticated aesthetic and the attention to detail of Italian fashion.
The color palette, comprising muted greens, wine reds and mustards, retains a connection with Italian tradition while projecting a serene and refined character. These hues are found both in the interiors and the various graphic motifs of the brand design—created in partnership with Marion Zanette—as well as the packaging used for the products prepared in the workshop. This reinforces the identity of this new brand and is part of MYT+GLVDK’s integrated design concept. This vibrant yet elegant chromatic range welcomes each visitor and invites them to enjoy a pleasant stay in these spaces.
The pasta workshop is a setting in which skill and tradition come together to bring to life a unique choreography. Open to view of diners, the space is transformed into a continuous spectacle in which the cooks, with precise and coordinated movements, appears to dance to the rhythm of an invisible symphony. Expert hands knead, cut, and shape the dough into different forms, creating dishes that reflect the history and art of Italian cuisine. This corner, imbued with familiar sounds and smells, invites us to immerse ourselves in the sensorial experience of homemade pasta, which carries with it the legacy of generations and the attention to detail in every gesture that defines Piazza Pasticcio.
In a second phase, a bar on the second floor will maintain the visual unity with a layout that encourages interaction and conversation in a dynamic and vibrant space. The furnishing will include carpets in cognac and bottle green, blown glass ceiling lamps, bronze wall appliques and paintings and posters that evoke the art of mid-20th century Italian advertising.
The attention paid to every detail at Piazza Pasticcio reinforces the commitment to authenticity and excellence that is evident in all its space. The display cabinets of the restaurant store emphasize the freshness and craft of the hand-made pasta and high-quality products that they are filled with. The visual design and murals add a touch of nostalgia, celebrating Italy’s rich popular culture. The inclusion of these elements by the MYT+GLVDK team create an immersive experience that transports diners to a corner of Italy, uniting in the concept the value of materials, skills and local traditions.
