Tary: A Minimalist Lakeside
Perched above the emerald waters of Lake Kolsay in Kazakhstan’s Almaty region, Tary is a contemporary café by Sandyq Group, designed by Bekbay Project. Seamlessly integrated into the mountainous landscape, the 1450- square-meter structure was envisioned as a tranquil retreat for travelers.
Defined by panoramic glazing, natural timber surfaces, and a restrained material palette, the architecture reflects a quiet, purposeful elegance. The design draws inspiration from Kazakh ornamental traditions and spatial principles, reinterpreted through a minimalist lens. Local stone, glass, and warm wood textures create a sense of rhythm that feels both grounded and weightless. Expansive terraces open directly onto views of the lake and surrounding peaks, immersing visitors in the vastness of the natural setting.
Despite the remote location, the structure was built with great care to preserve the land’s natural contours. A custom foundation system minimized environmental impact, while the use of local resources, energy-efficient glazing, natural ventilation, and adaptive LED lighting ensured long-term sustainability and comfort.
Tary is more than just a place for coffee. It offers a moment of stillness between forest and sky, where contemporary architecture becomes a frame
for the landscape. More importantly, the café has already gained cultural significance. As a result of its sensitive integration into nature and its refined architectural presence, Tary has become a new point of attraction in the region and a symbol of thoughtful, place-specific design.
