beda: In the booming real estate market of Bozeman, Montana, this family of five decided to increase the size of their home instead of trying to find something new. This beautifully designed home embodies a clean and modern take on traditional Montana living. The family of five who call this house home sought to increase their living space, and the result is a breathtaking testament to innovative design and functionality.
House 1114 - A Clean Take on a Montana Home is a new addition, garage, and full gut renovation of a 2,800 sqft house. The back half of the original house was removed and replaced with a more usable and open living and dining room. The existing garage was demolished and relocated to the alley, allowing for a more open and welcoming entry to the main house.
The material and formal direction for the project avoids the use of typical punched openings. Seven-foot-tall windows and doors extend from the floor to a datum line which is further emphasized by a change in exterior siding. Not only does this provide the main living space with an abundance of natural light, it organizes the volume giving it an abstract reading of a simple form perched atop a series of wooden walls.
For the complete renovation of the interior of the original house, the kitchen was reconfigured to be more usable and provide space to gather comfortably around a large kitchen island. A new mudroom, laundry room, bedroom, and secondary den were added to accommodate the daily needs of a family of five. In addition to these spaces, a private bathroom was added to create a more traditional primary suite. The new layout is more functional and provides a lot more space for the family to host guests or entertain. As a bonus, the new floor plan allocates kids spaces to the lower-level of the house, with more formal parent spaces located on the main floor.
