Sattar Karimli: MRDV Apartment is a two-level residence located in the coastal district of Bayil, Baku, Azerbaijan. Spanning approximately 140 m² across two floors, the apartment offers sweeping views of the Caspian Sea and the National Flag Square. The concept was driven by the desire to create a calm, spacious, and emotionally clear home within a dense urban environment.
The interior is shaped by a contemporary-minimalist approach that emphasizes simplicity, light, and tactile materials. Floor-to-ceiling windows were strategically used to bring in natural light and visually connect the interiors with the surrounding seascape. The layout clearly separates public and private zones while preserving continuity and openness. Warm neutral tones, soft textures, and custom-built furniture ensure a lived-in, balanced environment.
The project was inspired by the contrast between the city’s vibrant energy and the meditative quality of the sea. One of the main challenges was to ensure that the vertical circulation between floors felt seamless without compromising privacy. This was addressed by integrating a soft transitional palette and maintaining visual continuity through material choices.
MRDV Apartment reflects a harmonious relationship between modern urban living and natural serenity — designed for those who seek both functionality and emotional clarity in their living space.
