Instinto Estudio: What characteristics does a hotel need when it is completely immersed in a world full of dense nature? That was the first question we asked ourselves when we were chosen to develop an architectural proposal in Ostional, Guanacaste, an area known for being full of such diverse flora and fauna.

We wanted to respect this abundant nature as much as possible, which is why we created a circular geometry that allows for a 360-degree experience with the environment. One of our guiding convictions was that “There’s no reason for a rigid barrier between the artificial and the natural.” We decided to design two concentric rings. The first one regulates light, temperature, and privacy through the use of vegetation wires. The second lends flexibility and dynamism to the interior, in relationship with the exterior, dissolving space limits by using semipermeable fabric sliders to regulate the opening as needed.

As a low budget project, we knew we needed to focus on the energy and thermal efficiency of every single unit. The material choice was made for its warm qualities and ease of construction, using recycled wood whenever possible. In a daring stroke of genius, we decided with our client to not use any glass at all.
The result is a subtle beauty that seamlessly integrates the exquisite Costa Rican natural landscape.
