"My Two Cars Garage" by Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY was created for the world premiere of Porsche's all-new electric Macan during Singapore Art Week. Drawing inspiration from Porsche’s signature performance-driven design, and precision engineering, the pavilion embodies the brand's core values of innovation, speed, and elegance. Its open, flowing interior serves as a dramatic stage, placing the car at the heart of the space and inviting visitors to explore and discover the vehicle’s design features in an immersive and engaging environment.
The project is a collaboration between Michael Mauer (Style Porsche) and Marc Fornes (THEVERYMANY). Both designers share a strong vision for Performance Driven Design. Mauer’s process is defined by "Focus, Purpose, and Tension," while Fornes approaches design through Essentialism (what you see is all there is, yet it’s so much more), Specificity (each part has a unique position and purpose), and Frozen Tension (where strength is derived from geometry, not material). Together, they aim to create not just a functional structure, but a machine for dreams.
Structure and Skin
The pavilion’s structural integrity comes from its monocoque shell, where the skin itself carries the load, eliminating the need for internal supports or a traditional frame. Advanced computational tools explored the relationship between curvature, structural performance, and material efficiency, resulting in a complex, double-curved surface composed of ultra-thin aluminum strips. Each of the 6,380 strips is uniquely shaped to fit perfectly within the overall geometry, contributing to both its aesthetic fluidity and the resilience needed to withstand external forces like wind and load.
Perforations
The perforations in the aluminum skin are inspired by the intricate detailing of the Porsche Macan’s bodywork, particularly its plastic trims. These openings allow light to filter through, creating dynamic patterns that shift throughout the day as the sun moves. At night, they radiate light from within, evoking a sense of time and motion. The interplay of light and shadow becomes a central element of the design, reinforcing the sense of discovery as visitors move through the space.
Modular Assembly
The pavilion is constructed using a modular approach, with each component prefabricated off-site and assembled into modules. These modules are then fitted together on-site like pieces of a puzzle, significantly reducing construction time and labor. This seamless integration enhances both the pavilion’s visual and spatial continuity, with no visible joints to disrupt the smooth, uninterrupted surface—reflecting the precision and elegance that are hallmarks of the Porsche brand.
Immersive Experience
At its core, the pavilion is designed as an immersive environment. It places the Porsche Macan as the central focus, with the structure’s doubly curved surface and intricate network of tubular profiles framing the car. The space can accommodate up to two cars and even allows for dynamic reveals, where the vehicle can drive through the structure, adding to the theatricality of the event.
More than just a stage for the car, the pavilion is an experience in itself, designed to spark curiosity and imagination in visitors, much like the innovation and performance of the vehicle it showcases.
