ATLAS_ Actions & Tools to Leverage Architectural Sustainability

ATLAS is Park Associati's response to the urgent need to address the topic of sustainability in architecture in a critical and constructive manner, to tackle the multiple crises characterising the present time.

ATLAS is a manifesto, with a theoretical core based on the narrative and critical elaboration of the complex topic of sustainability, and a practical aspect that involved the definition of concrete tools guiding our way of doing architecture.

Originating from an analysis of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Programme, ATLAS is an operational tool through which we intend to breathe new life into our projects by steering them towards a more practical environmental awareness and responsibility.

While ESG (Environment Social Governance) and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) are globally recognised frameworks aimed at guiding processes and projects towards more sustainable horizons, they are not always aligned. ATLAS’ core premise is a fusion of these two operating procedures, which we believe can be united and coexist within three keywords: Justice, People, Biosphere. Underlying this architecture are the statements; these guidelines represent our mission and provide innovative solutions aimed at addressing the climate crisis challenge and the resulting social issues, while simultaneously improving the quality of our projects and the communities they serve.

ATLAS' immediate reference is the theme of the atlas, an operational tool capable of guiding design. The statements, which convey the mission and strategies, correspond to a set of practical actions necessary for thinking and doing architecture today, 25 routes that help steer each project as close as possible to the goal of sustainability, not only environmental.

ATLAS is a layered tool that achieves thoroughness through a hundred instruments operating at micro-scale level. Capable of being adapted to contextual conditions, these hundred dynamic design strategies detail what is outlined in the theoretical framework on which ATLAS is based. Used in the project daily routine, these tools allow for achieving concrete results in a careful and controlled manner, placing environmental responsibility at the forefront of the design process.

ATLAS is a dynamic working tool with which we constantly engage, integrated into the process of defining each project through internal workshops aimed at learning the tools and implementing the guidelines that represent our mission.

Here is an images relating to the application of ATLAS' design strategies to Coop Lombardia, an ongoing brand architecture project entailing the definition of a new functional and formal ‘super-market‘ model. A project where sustainability translates into connection with the territory, care for the environment and social involvement.

Short profile Park Associati

Founded in Milan in 2000 by Filippo Pagliani and Michele Rossi, Park Associati focuses on architectural design, urban planning, landscape, interior design and product design.

Park Associati's approach to architecture is analytical, pragmatic and tailored, strong in tradition and at the same time capable of generating new linguistic codes through a process that combines listening, intuition and experimentation. Whether it is the Regione Lombardia skyscraper, the Luxottica or Salewa headquarters, a residential space, a Hermés, Brioni or Canali luxury boutique around the world, the retrofitting of a Milan’s Modernist building or the restoration of an entire neighbourhood, Park Associati sees each project as an opportunity to seek innovative, tailor-made solutions expressed through quality and attention to human beings.
