Between the Walls developed and implemented the design project amidst the Carpathian nature — Gont.
Gont is a refined cottage project located in the village of Tatariv in west of Ukraine, designed by the interior design studio Between the Walls in 2023. This property is harmoniously integrated into the mountain slope, offering breathtaking views of the Carpathians from its spacious terrace. The project derives its name from the traditional Carpathian wooden cladding — gont. Gont are wooden shingles traditionally used to decorate houses in the Carpathians, creating a unique local decorative effect. We chose this technique to honor local traditions and aimed to harmoniously integrate the modern architectural form into the surrounding landscape, emphasizing its connection to the region.
The uniqueness of Gont lies in its ability to integrate modern design into the beauty of the wild nature. The house is surrounded by dense forests, clean air, and authentic Ukrainian charm. Between the Walls studio paid special attention to the use of natural materials in both the architecture and the interior of the house. This reflects the studio's philosophy, which focuses on eco-friendly design and reducing the use of chemicals. Every detail of Gont House reflects a love for nature and a concern for the environment, which are core values of the studio.
Entrance Hall
The entrance area of Gont sets the tone for the entire interior. A full-length mirror and functional wardrobes for outerwear ensure practicality. The entrance door with a glass insert lets in natural light, creating a sense of space and openness. The floors and walls are covered with ceramic tiles for durability, while painted wooden paneling on the ceiling maintains the overall warm atmosphere. Natural materials and warm tones in the hallway create a welcoming feel.
Kitchen
The Gont kitchen combines functionality and coziness. A table for six, built-in kitchen, and a large window with mountain views provide a space for pleasant moments. The materials used include wood for the floor and ceiling, local quartzite for countertops, and Ukrainian-made decorative plaster on the walls. Wool light fixtures serve as accents, adding uniqueness and warmth.
Living Room
The Gont living room is a space for relaxation and enjoying nature. Large windows offer views of the Carpathians, which become natural decor. A modular corner sofa, vintage armchairs, a coffee table made of natural oak from GUSHKA brand that can be used as a pouf by removing the cushion, wooden vases from Tvoї Studio, and a rug from Kononenko ID create a homely atmosphere. The rug, symbolically created during the war, adds depth and history to the space. The fireplace, log storage, and TV ensure comfort and coziness. The materials used in the living room are similar to those in the kitchen, ensuring design continuity.
Bedroom
The Gont bedroom is designed for rest and rejuvenation. Double beds with designer headboards, wardrobes, an FDB Møbler bench, hangers, bedside tables, sconces, and curtains provide comfort and functionality. To enhance coziness, we chose Ukrainian home decor brands such as GUSHKA pillows and Basny Rugs. The bedroom exudes a sense of safety and tranquility, especially important in contemporary conditions.
Bathroom
The cottage's bathroom incorporates modern details: a sink, mirror, shower, toilet, cabinet with appliances (boiler, washing machine), and towel dryer create a convenient space. A window adds natural light, making the room even more appealing. The materials used, such as tiles from WOW Sweet Bars, ensure aesthetics and durability.
Gont is a symbiosis of modern design and natural beauty, where every detail is thought out to harmonize with the Carpathian mountains and Ukrainian culture.
