SAOTA's project Kloof House took home Gold at the 43rd Annual Loeries Awards, in the Design category for Architecture. Winners were announced during Loeries Creative Week (21 - 22 October 2021) in Cape Town, which welcomed hundreds of creatives from across Africa and the Middle East. The awards programme recognises the creative excellence found within the region and industry.

Buffelsdrift, a collaborative project between SAOTA and Jaco Booyens Architect, was awarded Bronze in the Design category for Architecture.

More about SAOTA’s winning projects:

Kloof House is a family home positioned below Lion’s Head in Cape Town, South Africa. The strongest gesture is the inverted pyramid roof which creates a clerestory window around the upper level. It allows the building to open up, capturing views of the sky, Table Mountain and Lion’s Head and bringing the sun and moon into the home, heightening the connection to nature and its cycles. Kloof House has also been shortlisted as a finalist in the WAN Awards 2021 in the House of the Year specialist category and won the CIfA Award for Architecture 2019 and Idea-Tops Global Nomination Award 2019.

The restoration of the ensemble of heritage buildings on Buffelsdrift farm and guest house, west of Ladismith in the arid Klein Karoo region of the Western Cape, by SAOTA and Jaco Booyens Architect, a specialist in clay buildings, also won the gold medal at the seventh edition (2019) of the international Domus Restoration and Conservation Award in Italy. The restoration involved a cluster of Cape buildings in a valley beneath the Swartberg mountain range, consisting of the main house and two barns, plus a guest house.
