A property that melds elegance with homely comfort on the shores of Loch Ness.

Aldourie Castle, situated just six miles southwest of Inverness, is a premier private-hire estate set on the shores of Loch Ness. Spanning 500 acres of natural woodlands and beautifully landscaped grounds, this castle, member or The Aficionados, offers an exceptional blend of historic charm and modern luxury.

Its origins trace back to 1626, with significant Gothic enhancements added in the 1860s resulting in the castle's distinctive apricot clay silhouette. In recent years, present-day owners Anne and Anders Holch Povlsen undertook a major restoration aiming to preserve the castle’s historical charm while creating a comfortably elegant atmosphere.

The accommodation includes 12 uniquely styled suites, each combining historical elegance with contemporary comfort. These suites feature a mix of antique furnishings, oriental rugs, and luxurious fabrics such as Victoriana velvets, creating a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere. Modern touches, including plain white sofas and carpets, complement the historical elements, offering a refined and

Guests have the option to book the entire castle, which includes all 12 suites, or to stay in one of four additional private-hire cottages scattered throughout the grounds. These cottages, designed by Ruth Kramer, echo the castle’s Danish influences and Scottish heritage with their soft, muted tones, providing an additional 12 bedrooms.

The Great Hall, a key feature of the castle, offers a grand space for gatherings. It is adorned with the crest of 17th-century French philosopher Michel de Montaigne and showcases an elegant mix of historical and contemporary design elements. Other notable areas include the billiards room, library, and dining room, all furnished with a variety of antiques and art pieces that contribute to the castle’s eclectic yet cohesive aesthetic.

Aldourie Castle’s gardens, redesigned by landscape designer Tom Stuart-Smith, offer a range of experiences from wildflower meadows to classical Victorian walled gardens. The gardens also feature a glasshouse for tropical plants and citrus trees. Meticulously maintained, these gardens provide a picturesque setting for outdoor events and activities throughout the year.

The estate’s event space, The Steadings, adds versatility to the venue. Restored by architect Ptolemy Dean and Wildland’s conservation team, The Steadings combines Nordic modernity with Scottish historical elements. It includes a whisky snug, country-style kitchens by Edinburgh-based Laurence McIntosh, and large, characterful event spaces suitable for various functions.

Given its location in Loch Ness, this member of The Aficionados offers private access to the loch and opportunities for outdoor activities. The estate’s ornate boathouse, designed in the shape of a boat’s hull, enhances the natural beauty of the surroundings and provides a unique setting for activities such as wild swimming.

The estate’s comprehensive services include full staffing, ensuring a seamless experience for guests. The on-site team handles all aspects of hospitality, from chefs and housekeeping to gamekeepers and logistics, delivering a bespoke level of service tailored to each event.

Combining historic grandeur with modern luxury, Aldourie Castle provides an elegant and distinctive accommodation experience. Its beautifully designed interiors, expansive gardens, and exceptional service make it an ideal venue for a range of private events and exclusive stays.
