Nuno Nascimento Architecture: Nestled in the heart of Arroios, Lisbon, Apartment RL is a recently completed residential renovation project that exudes serenity and charm. This two-bedroom haven boasts a tranquil oasis in its backyard, providing a perfect escape from the bustling city life. The 80m2 apartment, set on a single level, is thoughtfully designed to maximize space and natural light, creating a sense of airiness and comfort. Completed in 2024, this intimate abode is a testament to the power of clever design and renovation. With a total site size of 100m2, the project seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking a peaceful urban lifestyle. The carefully curated design elements, coupled with the small oasis, create a unique and captivating living space that is sure to inspire and delight. The aim was to respect the heritage of the apartment of the building but giving it a twist with new materials that connect the interior space with the exterior garden. Elements like the moldings on the ceiling and the carpentry work were restored to their original shapes, and the new features and spaces like the bathroom and kitchen were thoroughly drawn with materials and colours that give a continuity between the interior and exterior spaces.

Were there any specific challenges faced during the renovation process, particularly given the apartment's location in Arroios, Lisbon, and how were these challenges overcome?

THe main challenges were making this small apartment livable - the conditions were very bad, with very few light and the materials all damaged. We tried to maintain the character of the apartment, bringing as much light as possible.

Can you elaborate on the concept of the 'small oasis' at the back of the apartment? What inspired this feature, and how does it enhance the living experience?

The clients are lucky enough to have a small garden on the back of the apartment - which in Lisbon can be a hidden gem. So we tried to give it some life, with a small plunge pool and a dining area with a small garden.
