Since the birth of architecture, humans have had containers to capture light. The brilliance of light makes the world pure, while its shadows flow in the pure space, with varying depths, twists and turns, and even swaying ripples or waves that trap the observer's mind. Such shadows give space a multidimensional overlay, creating worlds beyond the world, and imbuing buildings with dramatic character and conflicting tension.

Crazy House is known as one of the most strange buildings in the world. When you enter Crazy House, you will instantly feel a cool, fresh air as if you were in a forest. Visiting Crazy House is taking a journey in giant tree trunks with the small winding paths. The tree trunks are connected by the tree branches. You won’t know where these branches may lad. They can take you closer to the sky – the top of Crazy House or they can take you to the ocean – a room with 3D painting of sea creatures.

Located in the Portuguese town of Oeiras, Casa CM is an architectural response to the irregular morphology of the allotment where it is inserted. The project consisted in developing an ‘earthen-house’ that could take advantage of the characteristics and topography of the site, conserving the existing trees.

This project is part of the original premises and property of the “Quinta Montes Molina” located in Merida, Yucatan. The house was built in 1906 and became an architectural icon and emblem of the Paseo Montejo, the most notorious avenue on the city in which most of the early century houses were built during the sisal boom.

The first-place winner for the Rifat Chadirji Prize 2020 and the People’s Choice Award is a team of five from Cairo, Egypt: Ali Khaled Elewa, Mostafa Ahmed Zakaria, Sherif Khaled Abdelkhaleq, Hoda Essam Abdelmawla and Ebtisam Elgizawy. The winning team was selected out of 177 submissions from 42 countries received this year.
