The philosophy behind L'and Vineyards, led by CEO José Cunhal, focuses on sustainable winemaking, responsible agriculture, and fostering a strong connection with the local community. This approach reflects his vision of creating a positive impact on the region while embracing environmental consciousness and the traditions of Alentejo.

The Aficionados, a leading travel resource for those in search of luxurious accommodations that seamlessly blend design, authenticity, and high-end hospitality, introduces L'AND Vineyards—an exquisite destination that embodies family heritage, architecture, the beauty of Alentejo, and the art of winemaking. This lakeside retreat, located near Montemor-o-Novo and within an hour’s drive from Lisbon and the beaches of Comporta, features private villas, a vinotherapy spa, and a 66-hectare estate of vineyards, oak, and olive groves, with views of the medieval Montemor Castle.

At its core, L'AND reflects a commitment to sustainable agriculture, thoughtful land stewardship, and a deep connection with the local community. This philosophy is driven by CEO José Cunhal, who envisioned the estate as a harmonious blend of design and environmental respect. The architecture, crafted in collaboration with award-winning firm Promontório, draws on the region’s vernacular, featuring whitewashed villas and townhouses that integrate seamlessly with the natural landscape.

Designed by Márcio Kogan of Studio MK27, known for his celebrated work on the Fasano Hotel in São Paulo, the hotel's interiors and structure evoke modern elegance while paying homage to local traditions. The landscape, curated by Lisbon-based PROAP, enhances the Mediterranean surroundings with vineyards and groves of olive, orange, and oak trees. The estate’s vineyards produce renowned grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Syrah, and Verdelho, contributing to a deep-rooted culture of wine and environmental preservation.

Founded by the Sousa Cunhal family, who have been part of the region since the 18th century, L'AND reflects the wild beauty and spirit of Alentejo. It serves as a testament to the family's commitment to sustainability, crafting a retreat that respects the land while preserving its legacy for future generations.

Interior design married to nature

The interiors at L'AND are a seamless blend of simplicity and nature, designed to reflect the natural surroundings without overwhelming the senses. Márcio Kogan masterfully combines light, wood, and modern design with traditional craftsmanship, creating an ambiance that is structural yet soft, understated yet rich in texture. The earthy tones and materials used in the décor maintain a dialogue with the bold architecture, grounding it in the rural landscape.

Key design elements include hand-tufted carpets by Fabricaal (one of Europe's few remaining original wool handicrafts), black slate floors typical of Alentejo, and oak wood wainscoting. Signature design pieces such as Tom Dixon's Void lights, chairs by João Serodio and João Santa Rita, and furnishings by Vladimir Kagan and Jorge Zalzuspin complement the space. Artworks by Michael Biberstein and photography by Blaufuks, Fernando Marante, and Marcio Villela further enhance the curated aesthetic.

The Sky Suites, one of the standout accommodations, offer private patios with plunge pools, outdoor fireplaces, and retractable roofs, allowing guests to sleep under the starry sky of Alentejo. These 45 suites and villas epitomize Kogan's fluid, elegant design, providing an atmosphere of comfort and luxury that seamlessly merges with the natural beauty outside.

Vinotherapy Spa by Vinoble Cosmetics

Wellness is a key focus at L'AND, with its 800m² Vinotherapy Spa by Vinoble Cosmetics, a brand founded by Austrian natural skincare expert Luise Köfer. Sharing L'AND's commitment to natural and sustainable practices, Vinoble carefully sources its ingredients, many of which are grown in their own herb gardens or vineyards. The use of grapes, seeds, pulp, and stems in skincare has been praised for centuries, making this partnership ideal for the spa’s treatments.

Márcio Kogan designed the spa with a holistic approach, using natural materials that mirror the surrounding landscape, with wood dominating the serene space. The spa features an indoor heated pool (adults-only), sauna, hammam, and treatment rooms, all harmoniously connected to the outdoors. Additionally, guests can enjoy an outdoor pool integrated into the landscape and a lakeside bathing platform, enhancing the connection with nature.

Voyages and the Flavours of Humble

Portugal's rich culinary traditions, shaped by its maritime history and fertile lands, provide Chef David Jesus with an endless source of inspiration. Drawing from the estate’s organic produce, local biodynamic farmers, and fresh catches from nearby Setúbal, he presents a sophisticated dining experience at the gourmet restaurant MAPA and the more relaxed Café da Viagem.

Chef David reinvents the essence of traditional Portuguese cuisine, adding contemporary flair while preserving its purest flavors. Each dish narrates his life story, blending personal memories with meticulous research and a touch of creative fun. For David, Alentejo serves as a central theme, offering a culinary language shaped by openness and rooted in family traditions: "The kitchen is a symbol of love and comfort,” he reflects.

Complementing the restaurant’s close ties to its winery, Pedro Durand, the Head Sommelier, enhances the dining journey with his expert wine pairings. Meanwhile, the Café da Viagem offers a more casual setting, with a wine bar and an outdoor terrace, perfect for enjoying a relaxed al-fresco meal under the pergola in the warmer months.

The Scents of Slow

The sights, sounds, and scents of the Alentejan wilderness, characterized by its undulating landscapes and soulful beauty, create a truly precious corner of Portugal. As one of the best-preserved regions in Europe, L'AND Vineyards serves as a natural basecamp for those looking to savor the essence of Portuguese life at a leisurely pace, all within a backdrop of exquisite design.
