Glass and light are not just materials and functions — they are, above all, tools for expressing emotion, creating atmosphere, and telling stories. Edyta Barańska, founder of Barańska Design, understands this perfectly. For over 20 years, she has been creating unique glass objects, combining exceptional craftsmanship with a contemporary approach to design. This mastery has recently been recognized in London, where two of her works — the MaBaMa lamp and the Bijou chandelier — were finalists in this year’s [d]arc awards.
Barańska Design is a renowned Polish studio specializing in artistic glass, led by Edyta Barańska for more than two decades. The studio focuses on creating original lighting pieces made from fused and blown glass, blending traditional craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. Each project is handmade, ensuring its uniqueness and the highest quality. A flexible approach to form, color, and detail has become the studio’s hallmark.
Edyta Barańska’s designs have been repeatedly honored in prestigious competitions around the world. This year, Barańska Design reached the finals of the [d]arc awards — one of the most important international events dedicated to lighting design. What makes this recognition particularly meaningful is that the winners are selected by architects, designers, and industry professionals themselves.
Among the awarded projects were two designs from the studio: the MaBaMa lamp, created in collaboration with young designers, and the Bijou chandelier — a spectacular interpretation of jewelry forms in glass. Both works were praised for their originality, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design — in terms of both aesthetics and sustainability.
MaBaMa – A Sculpture of Glass and Light
Created by Edyta Barańska in collaboration with emerging designers, the MaBaMa lamp embodies a fresh and bold approach to lighting design. The project combines artistic glass with biodegradable PLA, earning recognition not only for its aesthetics but also for its commitment to sustainability.
The hand-formed glass shade delights with its subtle reflections and soft lines, bringing elegance and a sense of lightness to the interior. The base, made using 3D printing technology from PLA material, gives the lamp a modern character and an ecological dimension. Designed as a modular object, MaBaMa can function as a standalone table lamp or as part of a larger lighting installation tailored to a specific space.
The variety of glass shade colors — from amber and pink to graphite and transparent — as well as the base hues, created with colored filaments (e.g., black, blue, pink, or natural PLA Wood), make the lamp highly customizable and easy to match with individual preferences and interior styles.
“The MaBaMa lamp not only decorates a space but also tells a story of the intersection of art and technology. It shows the direction in which contemporary, responsible design can go — rooted in craftsmanship but open to innovation,” says Edyta Barańska.
MaBaMa’s presence in the finals of the prestigious [d]arc awards confirms its value — not just as a beautiful object but as a conscious, contemporary design. Notably, it was one of only two Polish projects to reach the finals this year, underscoring the strength of Polish design on the global stage.
Bijou – A Luminous Glass Necklace
Bijou is an exceptional project — both in form and in the emotions it evokes. The chandelier, designed by Edyta Barańska, was born from a fascination with the world of jewelry and its symbolism. Drawing on her earlier experience as a designer of artistic jewelry, Barańska translated the idea of a necklace into the scale of a lighting fixture — with jewelry-like precision and attention to detail.
Each element is handmade from artistic glass — some spheres were created using traditional glassblowing techniques, while others, with softer and more organic shapes, were formed through fusing. The diversity of textures and translucency gives the impression of a luminous necklace suspended in space. Bijou uses energy-efficient LED lighting, and the glass used is durable and recyclable.
“From the beginning, I knew I wanted to create something more than just a lamp — I wanted it to be interior jewelry. The inspiration came from a necklace, so I started with sketches of the glass ‘beads,’ their proportions, and the overall shape. The key was to merge aesthetics with functionality,” explains Edyta Barańska.
Bijou is more than a decorative fixture — it’s a project with a message, celebrating femininity, creativity, and sensitivity to nature. Its organic forms evoke flowers and minerals, and the lamp itself — even when switched off — serves as a sculptural centerpiece in any interior.
Although recently launched, the chandelier has already gained international recognition, reaching the finals of the [d]arc awards 2025 alongside some of the best lighting designs in the world.
Edyta Barańska, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, has been running her studio for over 20 years, creating distinctive chandeliers, art installations, monuments, and fountains. Her works adorn the interiors of prestigious five-star hotels such as Hilton, Sheraton, and Marriott, as well as private residences worldwide — from New York to Dubai.
