Transform a historic former girl school into a local unique rebellious hospitality concept. In 2024, Apto Architects proudly unveiled The Rebyl, a transformative hospitality project in Nijmegen, Netherlands, developed in collaboration with Odyssey Hotel Group and Lingotto. This ambitious undertaking revitalized a 1922 girls’ school into a vibrant, 7,500 m² destination that bridges past, present, and future.

Tasked with construction supervision, interior design, overseeing every transformation phase, additionally Apto also contributed to the branding. The vision: to honour the building’s history while crafting a modern, rebellious hospitality concept. Original Art Deco and Amsterdamse School features, including high-ceilinged corridors, arched doorways, and floral tiles, were thoughtfully preserved and integrated.

Guest rooms reimagined to maximize light and space, feature loft-style layouts, exposed wooden beams, and a soft pastel palette that pays homage to the building's heritage. The vibrant lobby, with its iridescent pendant lighting and warm wood tones, sets the tone for a seamless, inclusive guest experience.

Located on the iconic Vierdaagseplein, The Rebyl has been returned to its status as a central component at the heart of Nijmegen. Fostering community integration through shared spaces like the Madame Liberty Restaurant, gym, and event areas, welcoming both locals and travellers. The restaurant, a centrepiece of sustainability and sophistication, features reconstituted denim tables, a central stone bar, and lush greenery, blending style with environmental consciousness.

As part of Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio, The Rebyl exemplifies Apto’s expertise in adaptive reuse, showcasing creativity, resilience, and a commitment to inclusive design. By transforming this historic structure into a beacon of progress and connection, Apto has given Nijmegen a new landmark honouring the past while inspiring future generations.
