Yun Gui, a pioneering architect and Director at LSM in Washington, D.C., has steadily built a career that blends technical expertise, innovative design and sustainable practices.

Since joining LSM in 2017, Yun has transformed her passion for architecture into a journey filled with award-winning projects that have reshaped urban landscapes across the United States and Europe.

What started as a love for design as a child has now developed into a career that influences how people experience built environments, merging form and function.

For Yun, success goes beyond creating structures; it’s about envisioning spaces that inspire, connect, and contribute to a more sustainable world.

Her work reflects this philosophy, focusing on sustainable design and leadership that positively impacts communities.

Yun’s journey into architecture started at a young age. Born into a family with a background in design, Yun was introduced to architectural tools early on.

Early exposure to model-making and engineering tools sparked Yun’s passion for architecture. In 2017, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Ohio State University and a Master of Architecture from Harvard.

Yun was exposed to global perspectives at Harvard, studying under well-known architects like Atelier Bow-Wow.

These experiences shaped Yun’s design philosophy, blending artistic vision with practical needs. Interning at firms like Gensler and Corgan, she gained essential technical drawing and construction skills that would serve him well throughout her career.

After graduating, Yun joined LSM and quickly advanced from Architect I to Director by 2022, thanks to her commitment to excellence and skill with complex projects. She now coordinates s a group of 40 architects in LSM's D.C. and New York offices, encouraging teamwork and innovation.

Yun is an architect with a D.C. license, which highlights her qualifications. In the industry, she is widely respected as a LEED Green Associate, NCARB-certified professional, and licensed professional.

Yun has led initiatives throughout her career that demonstrate her dedication to sustainability and creativity. The London headquarters of Covington & Burling is a notable accomplishment. This 110,000-square-foot space earned a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification, positioning it as a model for sustainable office design. Yun was involved in all stages, from real estate analysis and test-fit planning to design development and interior detailing. It marked her deep involvement in a project from start to finish, combining functionality with a focus on environmental impact.

Another noteworthy project is the London office of Milbank, which was situated in the city's first Net-Zero Carbon neighborhood .  This project is people centered, highlighting outdoor terraces that provide spectacular views to the city of London, as well as a central atrium where visitors and lawyers circulate around daily.

Her work on Milbank earned acclaim for its innovative approach and set a benchmark for future sustainable architecture in the city.

Yun’s technical proficiency and focus on sustainability have earned her significant recognition in the architectural community. And she demonstrated her skills and dedication during her work on Hamilton Square in Washington, D.C. Here, she led the renovation of key amenities, including the building’s lobby, terrace, and fitness center, blending modern upgrades with respect for the building’s history.

A number of Yun's projects, including K&L Gates in Boston and Xylem Water Solutions headquarters in Washington, D.C., have achieved LEED Silver  or Platinum certification, respectively.

These credentials demonstrate her capacity to create work environments that support wellbeing, lessen their negative effects on the environment, and adhere to the most recent sustainable practices.

According to Yun, these projects are declarations of how design can promote a better world rather than only being structures.

Along with her accomplishments in architecture, Yun is a pioneer in sustainable workplace design. She often gives speeches at industry gatherings, offering her perspectives on changing sustainable practices and design trends.

Notable engagements, like Chicago’s NeoCon and Boston’s Teknion Roundtable, showcase Yun’s influence as she discusses workplace trends shaping architectural design and her commitment to advancing sustainable practices.

Through these platforms, Yun encourages other architects to embrace sustainable approaches, she hopes to close the gap between environmental responsibility and innovative design.

“It’s about creating spaces that are adaptable, sustainable, and inspiring,” Yun says, a philosophy that underpins every project she undertakes.

Looking ahead, Yun aims to expand her role by merging design expertise with business strategy, guiding architectural firms toward sustainable, forward-thinking practices. She also plans to continue advocating for sustainable design through public speaking.

Yun’s passion for continuous growth reflects her understanding of architecture as a field that evolves with advancements in technology and materials. From new sustainable building methods to smart technologies, Yun is dedicated to staying at the forefront of industry trends.

“Architecture is a journey of learning and adapting,” she says, a belief that drives her commitment to innovation and excellence.

Yun Gui’s work demonstrates that architecture is both art and science. Each LSM project contributes to the architectural landscape and sets new standards for sustainability and functionality.

With every project, Yun reinforces her legacy as a leader in sustainable, impactful design that elevates communities and inspires change.

As Yun’s career unfolds, her influence in the industry only grows. Her journey involves resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to her craft.

With each new project, she takes another step toward her vision for architecture—a vision that combines beauty, purpose, and a responsibility to the planet.

As Yun Gui looks to the future, her path is clear: to leave a legacy of meaningful, sustainable spaces that transform how we live, work, and connect.
