In the south of Bahia, Brazil, Casa Bahia blends the contemporary vision of Daniel Fromer and Marina Linhares with the landscaping by Rodrigo Oliveira. Discover how design and tropical nature merge on the Costa do Descobrimento.
Located in Trancoso, in the south of Bahia, Brazil, Casa Bahia, designed by architect Daniel Fromer with interiors by Marina Linhares, is a perfect blend of architecture and landscaping, inspired by the vibrant local culture and tropical climate.
The project stems from the desire to integrate the house with the lush natural environment of the Costa do Descobrimento. Rodrigo Oliveira, responsible for the landscaping, explains: “We aimed to create a concept that feels genuinely Brazilian and tropical, as if everything had always been there. We used existing native plants and incorporated Brazilian trees and flowers to capture the essence of Trancoso. We wanted the house to convey this unique atmosphere.”
The selection of species considered the local heat and humidity, prioritizing adapted and sustainable plants. The sandy, impermeable soil of the cliff, with a solid rock base, posed a challenge but was overcome with innovative techniques to ensure the health of the plants and the thermal comfort of the residence. With large glass panels and doors, Casa Bahia offers continuous views of the garden, creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior. The landscaping is designed to provide natural shade and ventilation, with an abundance of trees ensuring privacy and comfort.
Various tree species were chosen to create a favorable and sustainable microclimate. Irrigation, using well water and optimized to prevent waste, along with the presence of native plants, helps attract local wildlife and promote biodiversity. The garden, which surrounds the entire house, offers multiple viewpoints and seamlessly integrates the indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing the natural landscape and reinforcing the connection with the surrounding environment.
