Ice Dams: Permanent Fixes You Should Consider

There are several issues homeowners never want to deal with; one is ice dams. They can lead to extensive and costly damage. What a nightmare! There are things you can do to help prevent this problem from happening. These are permanent fixes you should consider to stop ice dams from forming.

What Is an Ice Dam?

Before you can understand how to prevent an ice dam, you need to know what it is. An ice dam occurs when warm attic air heats the underside of a roof and causes the snow on the roof to melt. The thawing snow falls to the roof’s edge and freezes again, forming an ice ridge or dam.

The rest of the snow and ice left on the roof will begin to melt, but there will be nowhere for the water to go because of the dam. It will then begin to seep into the shingles and your house. Professionals can help you remove an ice dam, but after that process, you’ll want to learn how to prevent it from happening again.

Add Attic Insulation

Keeping the heat where it belongs will help prevent ice dams from forming in the first place. Insulation is a protective barrier that can create a more energy-efficient and comfortable house. The cooler air will stay in the attic while the rest of the home stays warm.

Contact a local insulation installer if your attic isn’t insulated well enough. They’ll help you decide which insulation is best and where to install it.

Install an Ice-and-Water Barrier

Most regions now require homes to have an ice-and-water barrier, but it’s possible your home was built before this mandate. These devices go under the roof, so adding one when you’re not reroofing would be silly. But if you are, that’s a perfect time.

Consider installing an ice-and-water barrier if you’re replacing or repairing your roof. It’s a wonderful way to add a layer of protection.

Maintain Your Roof

Keeping your roof in good condition is one of the best ways to prevent ice dams. Ensure you replace your roof when it’s old or has damaged shingles. Continuously check on your roof throughout the seasons for damage.

The above permanent ice dam fixes will help keep your home and you safe during winter. It’s better to avoid ice dams rather than fix them.
