Congratulations, you’ve decided to build your own home. While the process will require much of your time, money and effort, with a proper plan you will be finished in almost no time. And we’ll help with that.

Building a house can be stressful, especially if you haven’t done it before. Choosing the materials, hiring the contractors, creating your perfect design - all that is never easy. However, if you are prepared for the potential mishaps, there won’t be any problems you can’t deal with. Check out this article, and find out everything you need to know before building a house.

Get your finances straightened out

Building a house is one of the biggest investments you will ever make. Before you start the process, make sure you have enough money to cover all the expenses. Building a custom-made home can be a very expensive business, so you should know how much it will cost you before starting. The most important thing is to separate the building costs from the mortgage itself, as well as utility bills, taxes, etc.

Find the perfect land

The first step in house building is acquiring the land. This is an important step, because you would probably like to build on it for the rest of your life. Make sure, if possible, that you have enough space around the future house, so that you can expand later if needed.

Hire contractors

After you’ve found a suitable spot for building your dream home, it’s time to hire contractors who will help you with the construction process. Finding contractors takes a lot of time, but you can save yourself some trouble by checking their credentials and references first. If they’ve built several houses before, there is a good chance they know what they are doing. Choose only licensed contractors and ask for references of their previous customers - that way you will know what to expect.

Get your plans ready

Before starting your planning process, it's essential to consider a home warranty for your future residence. A 2-10 HBW warranty will provide peace of mind knowing you're protected against possible defective quality or material issues, which can save you time and money in the long run. When making such a significant investment, taking the necessary precautions and ensuring your new home is built to last is crucial.

After finding the perfect land and hiring experienced contractors, it’s time to get your plans ready. This is one of the most difficult tasks in house building, because it requires patience and creativity. For this step, we recommend using various programs and apps that will help you visualize your future home beforehand. They will also enable you to see the big picture and make changes as necessary.

Decide on the roofing material

By this point, we assume you’ve decided on the general design of your house. However, there is one more decision that needs to be made - what kind of roof do you want? Generally speaking, there are three main roofing types: asphalt shingles (least expensive), clay tiles (more expensive), and wood shingles (most expensive). Additionally, there is EPDM roofing. But there are limits to the biggest size EPDM roofing sheet I can buy.

Asphalt shingles require frequent maintenance and don’t last long; clay tiles are an excellent choice if you want something that won’t need any repairs for many years; and wood shingles are a good choice for those who love natural materials.

Choose the right windows

Windows are needed for providing light and ventilation in every home. In addition, they can be used for decoration, as well as protection against weather conditions. Choosing the right windows is essential for the comfort and safety in your home. And the right windows will end up saving you money on utility bills for years to come.

Make final decisions about the exterior design

At this point, we assume that everything inside your home is sorted out - walls, floors, windows, cabinets, appliances etc. Now it’s time to decide on the outside design of your house. Choose from various options such as brick pattern, shingle pattern or even stained glass windows! You may also add decorative wooden beams or columns here – just make sure they match both the interior design and the exterior color of your home.

Plan the layout of your house

If you’ve decided to do it yourself, this is not the time to get discouraged. At this point, you’ll have to spend at least a month planning the right layout for your house. It’s important to make sure every single room has enough space and that all the appliances are in the right places. You will also have to figure out how to place the bathrooms, kitchens and closets - it will be easier if you have an actual blueprint that you can follow along with.

Choose the right flooring

After you’ve got the walls, windows and outside design ready, it’s time to choose the right flooring for the interior. Your options may range from natural wood floors to laminate or tile. Decide on what kind of material you want before you start laying the floors, so that you don’t run into any surprises later. Also, remember that you may want to change your mind in the future - hardwood floors can be stained or painted; while tile floors can be removed and replaced with something else.

Choose countertop materials

At this point, you should already know what material you want for your cabinets, flooring and roofing. Now it’s time to choose the countertops. Counter tops are not only decorative elements of a home, but they can also affect its value.

The Takeaway

Building a house is incredibly time consuming. But it can also be very rewarding when done right. You don’t need to do it alone (nor should you). Remember that your tastes and needs may change, so make sure you choose options that allow for some flexibility.
