A unique folding pillow that regains its bounce and achieves unmatched cleanliness with every wash.
The innovative Koa Pillow has been designed to clean ten times more effectively than a standard pillow. With every wash the Koa Pillow is refreshed and refluffed for the utmost comfort. Eliminating the problem of poor sleep due to flat, lumpy, discoloured and odour-harbouring pillows.
The patent-pending design also offers adjustability, allowing sleepers to customise their perfect pillow height by adding or removing panels. The Koa Pillow launches in the UK on April 24th 2024, on madebykoa.com and is launching in the US later this year.
THE STORY
From the creators of the worlds fastest change duvet cover, Koa founders Ben and Luke, have turned their attention to pillows. Frustrated by months of poor sleep due to his pillow, Ben approached Luke with the aim of creating a pillow that remains fresh, soft and supportive.
Their design approach found that it’s the build up of grime in pillows that has the biggest impact on comfort. Sweat, body oils, and dead skin accumulate quickly when we’re sleeping on something every night and these all cause the pillow fill to clump. Not only ruining our sleep but also harming our health.
Luke: "Yellowing pillows with a musty smell indicate bacteria, fungi, and dust mites, which thrive on sweat, dead skin, and body oils. Affecting sleep quality, breathing and can be the cause of skin flare ups."
1. The University of Manchester found pillows harbour millions of spores of dangerous fungi.
2. The American Lung Association: Dust mites are silent agitators, intensifying asthma.
3. Amerisleep: After four weeks, your pillow cases have 12 million colonies of bacteria per inch.
Ben: “Through testing we found that standard pillows, and even pillows that say ‘washable’, are only cleaning the surface layer - even after multiple washes the core of the pillow was still harbouring dirt and grime.” (see more info on testing at the bottom)
The Koa Pillows unique panels unfold to wash ten times better than a standard pillow. Each panel can be added or removed for perfectly tailored comfort and its innovative easy-wash structure guarantees that the pillow is thoroughly cleaned and refluffed with every wash.
If a good night's sleep wasn’t important enough to Ben and Luke before, it really is now after they both became parents last summer days apart!
The Koa Pillow will retail at £69 with a launch discount at madebykoa.com from April the 24th.
ABOUT KOA
Based in London, Koa is a bedding brand that is driven by innovation. Winning a £60K award from the UK Design Council for their duvet cover set the stage for their success, a follow up crowdfunding campaign enabled them to open their first production line in Portugal. Their latest creation, the Koa Pillow, is the culmination of a two year passion project, highlighting Koa's dedication to improving sleep quality with forward thinking design.
Why wash your pillow?
Health & Hygiene: It's practically common sense to wash your pillows, especially when you think about the fact that we rest our faces on them and breathe over them for eight hours each night. Pillows accumulate sweat, moisture, body oils, dust, allergens, and become habitats for mites and bacteria. They can intensify allergies, aggravate skin conditions, and if nothing else, they can develop an odour.
Rejuvenating the Fill: The Koa Pillow is designed to benefit from washing. Each cycle makes the pillow fluffier and more voluminous, as the dryer's movement helps to redistribute and fluff up the clean fill. Our sleep and wash tests show that the pillow noticeably increases in thickness and comfort after a wash.
The Invention Breakthrough - Understanding Surface Washing
Koa's breakthrough in understanding why traditional pillows wash so poorly came after dying a pillow purple and mixing in simulated dirt and oils. When a standard pillow filled with the simulated dirt was washed in a domestic washing machine it was clear that the centre of the pillow fill was not cleaning. The simulated dirt was still visible in the pillow after ten washes. Using the same test, the Koa Pillow washed clean after one wash.
Why did we choose Cluster Fibre?
We chose to source a premium cluster fibre as our testing showed it has the perfect balance of softness, coolness, wash resilience and anti-clumping.
Materials & manufacturing:
Shell is 100% cotton (230 thread count) and the fill is premium Cluster Fibres with an anti-tangle finish for wash resilience.
The Koa Pillow is made in Hangzhou, China. A city we know well - Ben lived there. After having met with factories all around the world, we chose our partner because of the craftsmanship and ethics of their production.
How to refresh the Koa Pillow: Open the pillow and wash with detergent in a machine with ample space, at 40°C on a gentle cycle. For tumble drying, use a low setting with the dryer half-full. The open mode is great for fast line drying using the coat hanger hook at the top of the pillow.
