Apartment Hunting? Here's A Brief List Of What To Look For

Apartment hunting can be a stressful experience. There are so many different things to think about and do, which is why it's crucial that you have a plan before you begin your search. Here are some helpful tips for apartment hunting:

     1. Size

Many factors come into consideration when finding the ideal apartment, but the size is often one of the most important. Some people will opt to have a smaller apartment without paying extra for utilities, while others feel that an apartment should be just as big as they want it to be.

Recently, the Upper West Side (UWS) has been deemed a perfect spot for individuals looking for a family environment. Finding a two bedroom apartment here is easy. The spike in the number of families with children could be attributed to its proximity to public schools and playgrounds such as PS 154. Other highlights include good access to parks, easy access by subway or bus, and proximity to Central Park and Riverside Park.

     2. Cost

Cost is a crucial factor in the apartment hunting process. If you don't have enough money, then it might be a good idea to look for places with lower monthly costs so that way you can save up and get an even more excellent place later on down the line.

You can check on rental apps to find apartments within your price range.

     3. Location

Where is the apartment located? Is it close to where you work, or near your favorite restaurants and shops? If not, is there a shuttle bus that can get you from the apartment location to those things frequently?

The closer an apartment is to your needs while providing conveniences, the more likely it will be worth the cost.

If possible: look for apartments in zones with less traffic (so no long commutes!) and proximity to natural light.

     4. Security

You don't want to live in areas prone to break-ins and other crimes. Check the crime rate in your neighborhood.

Look at how secure your apartment complex is? Does it have access control systems and security cameras in place to minimize chances of break-ins or theft?

Do you know who will be living there with you - does any current resident seem shady, suspicious, or unreliable?

If someone tries to get into the building without a key card, do they need help from an employee on call 24/hrs- keep this in mind when looking for apartments that may not provide enough safety measures.

     5. Aesthetics

It's without a doubt that you want to live in an apartment that your visitors will admire.

Does the apartment look nice both on the inside and outside? Does it have a nice lobby?

Is the parking lot clean and well lit?

What about the building staff, are they friendly or not so much? If you're looking for an apartment on Craigslist, make sure to read reviews of other tenants. In general, though, try to find out as much information as possible before renting - but don't let your fear stop you from signing up with new people!

House hunting can be a tedious and confusing task, especially if you aren't sure what you are looking for. The following tips will help you find the perfect apartment. These are just a few top suggestions- we hope they work for you too!
