This restored four-bedroom villa in Galle welcomes its guests with curated design and an acre of lush greenery.

Elegant, discreet, curatorial and historical are just a few of the adjectives commonly used to describe Doornberg. This member of The Aficionados —a leading travel resource for those seeking luxurious accommodations that combine design, authenticity, and high-end hospitality— stands as a private-hire house located on Richmond Hill, Sri Lanka, that offers a unique experience with four oversized rooms overlooking the Indian Ocean and the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort. This elegant retreat is set within an acre of tropical gardens, preserving its rich history and colonial architecture.

Built in 1712 by a retired Dutch Admiral, Doornberg has undergone various adaptations over the centuries. Today, it has been restored to its original essence thanks to its current owner, Peter Harris, an Australian designer who discovered the house in 2004. His enchantment with Doornberg led him to acquire it in 2021, becoming the custodian the property needed.

Under Harris's stewardship, the house has undergone extensive restoration, guided by UNESCO historical architects and local artisans. The renovations honor its 18th-century legacy while incorporating modern technologies. Significant repairs included replacing damaged roof beams and sourcing 23,000 terracotta tiles from a nearby Dutch church.

The interiors of this lodging reflect Harris's eclectic taste, blending colonial antiques with contemporary pieces. The house houses a remarkable art collection, personally curated by Harris from his travels in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Colombo, and Australia. Each of the four luxurious suites features high-thread-count linens, cast iron bathtubs, and direct access to the gardens, ensuring both comfort and style.

A standout feature is the library, filled with literature on culture, architecture, and design, enhancing the artistic atmosphere of the home. Notable works include an eight-foot commissioned piece by Sri Lankan artist Hema Shironi, using embroidery to explore themes of history and mythology.

Doornberg’s location in Galle adds to its allure. This city is a melting pot of architecture and culture, with a rich heritage that spans from the 16th-century Zwart Bastion to Dutch constructions and the British lighthouse from the 17th century. Galle also offers modern delights, such as artisan shops, cafes, and rooftop bars inviting visitors to savor the surroundings.

More than just a vacation villa, this member of The Aficionados serves as an elegant refuge for families and friends to gather or for solo travelers to relish the beauty of a private estate nestled in lush greenery. With its blend of historical charm and contemporary luxury, Doornberg is poised to become an unforgettable destination for those seeking an authentic experience in Sri Lanka.

Harris's commitment to restoration ensures that Doornberg is not only a place of respite but also a journey through the rich history and culture of the country. Every corner of the house reflects his dedication to elegance and preservation, making it a perfect space for those who appreciate aesthetics, design, and history.
